What a morning! Guy Felicella spoke passionately about overcoming his addiction and shared insights on how others in his past situation can do the same. It took political will and community support to ensure the right supports were in place: harm reduction sites and recovery programs were a piece of the puzzle for him.
And he spoke powerfully about the impact of individuals in his life whose simple gesture of care—a hug, a hot coffee, a visit from his grandmother—kept him going until he was ready to face his past and change his future.
We couldn’t have asked for a better speaker this year. The beginning of his journey mirrors that of many of the folks at the Mission—people who are trying, as Guy said, despite everything we might think we see from the outside.
